IndigoFitness is celebrating 30 years of creating training spaces, marking three decades of British gym design, engineering and manufacturing.

Founded in 1996, IndigoFitness began by designing and manufacturing strength training equipment in Britain. Today, it brings together gym design, equipment manufacture, flooring, installation and bespoke engineering from its headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

During that time, strength training has moved from the periphery of many gyms to become central to modern training, while expectations around facility design, functionality, accessibility and personalisation have continued to grow.

IndigoFitness now creates training spaces for health and fitness operators, local authorities and leisure trusts, schools and universities, hotels, professional sport and the military. Its work spans bespoke strength and conditioning facilities, complex leisure refurbishments, premium health clubs and military training environments.

British design and manufacturing remain central to the business. Its UK capabilities allow equipment and complete spaces to be developed around the needs of each building, operator and end user.

Rob Coleman, Managing Director of IndigoFitness, said: “What I am most proud of is that the heart of IndigoFitness has not changed. We remain a British design, engineering and manufacturing business built around craftsmanship, problem-solving and making equipment that genuinely serves and endures.

“What has changed is the scale and sophistication of what our customers require. The industry has moved beyond equipment supply towards integrated environments, bespoke design and long-term service. We have evolved with those expectations while retaining the same foundation: make things properly, stand behind them and keep improving.”

One example of that longevity is Unique Physique in Leicester, the first complete gym fit-out delivered by IndigoFitness in the mid-1990s. Nearly three decades later, the gym was still operating with its original IndigoFitness equipment.

Milestones across the past 30 years include the early development of the Powerbag, securing its first Ministry of Defence contract and achieving accreditation for inclusive fitness products in 2003. Further investment supported the acquisition of its Nuneaton production site in 2017, expanding its in-house design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

The anniversary comes as IndigoFitness continues to invest in product development, manufacturing and complete training-space design, with growing emphasis on adaptability, long-term performance and making better use of available space.

Looking ahead, Coleman said: “Gym design will increasingly be about creating integrated environments rather than filling rooms with equipment. Flooring, acoustics, lighting, circulation and the way people train individually and together will become baseline considerations.

“Accessibility will need to move beyond compliance towards a genuinely inclusive experience. Sustainability will also require greater accountability, with longevity, repairability, responsible sourcing and product lifespan influencing design decisions from the outset.”

As it enters its fourth decade, IndigoFitness will continue to build on the principles that have shaped it since 1996: understanding how people train, solving the challenges presented by individual spaces, and designing and manufacturing solutions around them.
