Innovation with Intent

Innovation is essential in a sector that continues to evolve at pace. For Alliance Leisure, staying ahead of the curve means not only keeping a close eye on emerging trends, products and technologies, but also having a structured way to assess whether they genuinely add value for clients, operators and the communities that they serve.

To support this approach, Alliance Leisure have established a dedicated Product Steering Group. Bringing together expertise from across the business, the group provides the opportunity to review innovation in a consistent and considered way, ensuring new ideas are explored with curiosity, but also with clarity and purpose.

A More Structured Approach to Innovation

Innovation can take many forms, from new activity concepts and equipment to changes in layout, programming or delivery models. However, not all innovation is appropriate for every project, and not every trend will stand the test of time.

Alliance Leisure’s Product Steering Group was created to move beyond reactive decision-making and provide a clearer framework for evaluation. Its role is to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions and assess ideas against a set of agreed criteria, helping make informed, confident decisions.

Evaluating What Really Adds Value

Innovation should not only meet today’s needs but also support facilities to adapt over time as participation habits, community expectations and operational pressures change.

When reviewing new products or concepts, the Product Steering Group considers a broad range of factors, including:

  • User experience and participation: Will it genuinely engage people and broaden appeal?
  • Commercial performance: Revenue potential, throughput, staffing impact, lifecycle costs.
  • Operational reality: Maintenance, supplier support, reliability, training requirements.
  • Design and build implications: Space planning, building services, compliance, integration.
  • Inclusivity and accessibility: Who does this invite in and who might it exclude?
  • Sustainability: Materials, energy, durability and long-term adaptability.

From Trend to Proposition

A good example of this approach is the evaluation of Reformer Pilates. While demand for Reformer Pilates equipment and classes has grown rapidly, the Product Steering Group looked beyond its popularity to understand how it functions as a complete proposition.

This included considering programming, instructor requirements, studio design, throughput and revenue potential, as well as how it complements the wider fitness and wellbeing offering.

Alliance Leisure are now proudly working with Kore (formerly Sandwell Leisure Trust) and Tribute Brands to increase access to Reformer Pilates in the public sector.

Innovation Across Leisure and Construction

Innovation does not sit solely within activities and equipment. It also extends to how facilities are designed, built and future-proofed. The Product Steering Group considers how new concepts influence spatial planning, build requirements and long-term asset performance.

 Supporting Better Client Outcomes

Ultimately, the purpose of this structured approach is to support better outcomes for clients. Innovation remains central to Alliance Leisure’s approach, but it is innovation with intent.
