Creating Adventurous Places received award

By command of King Charles III, Creating Adventurous Places (CAP.CO), based in north Norfolk, has been awarded a sought-after Royal Warrant of Appointment in recognition of its work for the Royal Household; one of the highest accolades bestowed to businesses supported by the Monarch, and the first awarded to an adventure play provider.

Founded by Simon Egan in 2013, the company specialises in the design and build of bespoke adventure play. A leader in its field, CAP.CO, has produced award-winning work, which is now globally recognised.

CAP.CO began its first Royal commission eight years ago – to design and build a playground fit for The Crown Estate’s Windsor Great Park. Predominantly built from hardwood harvested from fallen trees within the wider Windsor Estate, Adventure Play was recently awarded the highest industry recognition - a THEA award, the Themed Entertainment Association’s international mark of excellence.

A second commission quickly followed to design a large-scale outdoor play space on the Great Field at King Charles’ Dorset new town Poundbury, where the main play structures were based on the stunning local architecture.

A third engagement at Nansleden - an entirely new suburb at Newquay - for the Duchy of Cornwall was next. With seven adventure play spaces planned across the community, designed to encourage different types of play across the play master plan. Each site also includes a local Cornish vernacular, playfully drawing on the wider context of the location and its history.

Then came the phased installation of the Children’s Play Area at the King’s beloved Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, which now receives half a million visitors a year; swiftly followed by a high-level adventure play area taking visitors up amongst the Sequoia trees at Dumfries House in Ayrshire as part of The King’s Foundation’s commitment to championing the benefits of nature-based play and learning. This was opened by the King himself in the summer of 2021.

Most recently, and in time for this summer, came a nature-based play trial at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen, which is consistent with CAP.CO’s core approach, to design fantastical structures that are hand-crafted in high-quality materials for the long term.

'To receive a Royal Warrant is such an incredible recognition of our work, and we are extremely honoured. To be endorsed by the Royal Court and to be allowed to use their household crest is a great achievement. We are all delighted, rather humbled and emotional. It’s at times like these that you wish your parents were still alive,' said CAP.CO’s founder Simon Egan who carries the warrant.

'A vital part of the brief on all the Royal commissions was the accessibility of our adventure play projects, and this is something our whole design and build team are experienced in delivering. For us, play is always more fun and meaningful if it’s accessible to all with no exclusions.

'We’ve come to learn that children rarely see disabilities in others, they just see someone who wants to play and be involved just like everyone else. It’s our passion to create places where everyone can play equally together,' said Simon.

A large part of qualifying for the Royal Warrant is being a company that supports and champions sustainability, something the King believes in very strongly.

'We began the process of formalising our sustainability strategy as a team in April 2024 but had been operating sustainably for years. We are committed to designing, building and maintaining sustainable, fun and safe - yet challenging - adventurous places that inspire the next generation to value and protect our planet. A big part of this is a commitment to leave the areas we work in, better than when we arrived,' said Simon.

CAP.CO has been awarded the Royal Warrant for a period of five years and will continue to produce its unique adventure play designs and builds from its Scottow headquarters in Norfolk.
