On 7 and 8 July, a two-day workshop exploring how exercise referral can work better for people living with long-term health conditions will take place at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh, Greater Manchester.
Reimagining Exercise Referral: From Insight to Action will bring together leisure, health and local authority professionals from across the UK to examine how exercise referral can become more consistent, joined-up and scalable.
The event is a joint venture between GM Active, a collective of 11 leisure and community organisations representing all 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester, and LFX, a network of more than 40 leisure operators and industry partners who meet regularly to share and develop ideas.
Keynote speakers will include Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi, an expert in lifestyle medicine and social prescribing and a regular contributor to TV programmes across the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, and Oliver Patrick, a physiologist and health assessment expert who was formerly head of physiology at Nuffield Health.
Jon Keating, GM Active’s head of business operations, said: 'Exercise referral is well-established and enjoys some success, which illustrates its huge potential, but all too often it is inconsistent, fragmented or difficult to scale.
'This working forum is bringing together leaders and practitioners from all over the UK to explore our shared challenge – how can we improve exercise referral as a system, so more people living with long-term health conditions can access meaningful, joined-up support?'
The programme will include panel discussions, workshops, cross-sector conversations, practical insights from across the UK and future-facing discussions on embedding best practice.
Both days will be hosted by Megan Richardson, CIMSPA’s workforce development manager for Scotland.
LFX founder Graeme Hind said: 'This isn’t just about sharing challenges. It’s about identifying what needs to shift and what our attendees can take back to their own settings, partnerships and pathways so exercise referral realises the holistic potential we think it can provide, and delivers the benefits people dealing with long-term health conditions deserve.'
Reimagining Exercise Referral: From Insight to Action takes place at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh, on Tuesday and Wednesday 7 and 8 July. Tickets cost £65 and cover both days.
