Mansfield sporting facilities transformed for community

A £2.5m sustainable sport and recreational activity facility has opened in Mansfield. The old playing field which was The RH Academy – (short for The Radford & Hymas Academy after the two benefactors John Radford and Steve Hymas) – has been transformed into a sports hub.

Mansfield Town FC Football in the Community, Mansfield Town academy teams, local community sports clubs alongside schools and residents can now enjoy fit-for-purpose sporting amenities comprising a full size 3G artificial pitch, 150-seater stand and a changing room pavilion.

The development also provides a sport education facility and community space to enhance opportunities for local communities and actively encourage participation in recreational programmes.

Architecture and sports & leisure firm LK2 worked with contractor Taylor Pearson Construction, to support Mansfield Town Developments CIC throughout the scheme. They secured £500,000 worth of funding from the Football Foundation and The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund.

“The grant will enable it to introduce community programmes to better serve local people at a modern sports facility,” says Gary Johnson director at LK2.
