Smethwick independent charitable organisation improves community health

A successful collaboration between a Smethwick independent charitable organisation and a local leisure provider is significantly improving the physical and mental well-being of participants, while fostering a strong, inclusive community.

The Bangladeshi Islamic Centre (BIC) on Lewisham Road, which provides vital support to amongst the most excluded and disadvantaged communities within Sandwell, has just renewed the booking of its culturally sensitive Ladies-Only weekly swimming sessions at the state-of-the-art Sandwell Aquatics Centre (SAC) on Londonderry Lane  – after feedback on the first block over the summer was overwhelmingly positive.

All participants requested continuation of the sessions, which have not only encouraged BIC’s Asian Muslim women to prioritise their wellbeing,  but also empowered them to embrace a healthier lifestyle in a safe setting where they feel respected and supported.

Nagina Khan, who heads up the Supporting Women From Isolation To Empowerment (SWFITE) team at BIC, explains: 'This collaboration between Bangladeshi Islamic Centre and Sandwell Aquatics Centre  has had an incredibly positive impact on our community, especially for Asian Muslim women who have often faced cultural, religious, and practical barriers in accessing mainstream leisure facilities. For many of our ladies this has been their first opportunity to learn or improve their swimming skills in a setting that fully respects their modesty and cultural values.

'Beyond physical health, the sessions have helped to reduce feelings of isolation by providing a welcoming space for women to come together, socialise, and build supportive networks. This initiative has not only promoted fitness but also strengthened community cohesion, showing how this partnership has created a lasting and positive change in the lives of our women.'

Lizzetta Grainger, assistant leisure manager at SAC – one of eight facilities run and maintained by Sandwell Leisure Trust (SLT) for Sandwell Council – adds: 'Sandwell Aquatics Centre is proud to partner with the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre, because this initiative reflects our shared commitment to promoting health, wellbeing, and community cohesion, ensuring that all women have the opportunity to enjoy physical activity in an environment that respects their cultural and religious needs.

'Through this partnership, we've seen not only increased participation but also stronger community engagement and empowerment. These sessions are more than just about swimming—they are about building confidence, supporting physical and mental health, and fostering a sense of belonging. We look forward to continuing this meaningful collaboration, working together to break down barriers, plus making sport and wellbeing accessible to all.'
