New fund for black community sport launched

A new fund will provide up to £10,000 in financial support to groups and organisations in London who are black-led and serving black communities.

The fund aims to deliver resources to an under-served part of the community by offering grants towards the costs of delivering sport and physical activity. Examples include equipment, venue hire, coaching costs, training and qualifications, utilities and bills.

The Black Community Sport and Physical Activity Fund has been launched by Sported, the UK charity promoting fairness and equity for young people through grassroots sport and physical activity, with assistance from its partners – Greater London Authority, London Sport, Sport England, London Marathon Charitable Trust and The Social Change Agency.

Black community leaders from within the Sported membership will drive the fund and ensure the money delivers immediate benefit and long-lasting impact. Sported says it believes this will result in more balanced and effective funding decisions and outcomes.

The Fund is open to all groups that meet designated criteria, with priority given to applications with a focus on:

  • Lower socio-economic groups
  • Participants with disabilities
  • Long-term health conditions
  • Young people at risk of violence or gang influence

Sported will also prioritise innovation and support for new groups that may have previously been unsuccessful with funding bids.
