Work starts on £2m gym for Derby

JD Gyms has embarked on a £2m refurbishment of a new site in Derby as part of the roll out plans for its affordable gym concept.

The company, part of JD Sports Fashion, has signed a lease for a 28,000sq ft unit in Allenton. The gym, which is due to open later this year, will feature bootcamp, boxing and functional areas; spaces for free weights and strength training as well as a sprint track, training rig, saunas and more than 300 classes a month. Membership will be charged at £19.99.

The gym is located on land, which formed part of a land assembly exercise by one of the large supermarkets to construct a new store. Following the decline in this sector, these plans were abandoned and the land subsequently sold and acquired by JD Gyms.

The company has already opened 12 gyms in cities across the country – including Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool and has identified a further 20 locations for development within the next 12 months.
